Organic Runner Mom’s Weekly Workout Recap

Last week we had full on summer in New Hampshire with hot and humid weather in the 90’s all week. It was hard to motivate to get out and workout in the heat but I slogged through it all and had some great workouts and a race at the Loon Mountain Race!

Monday

Boston Lot Trail Running

Boston Lot Trail Running

On Monday I met up with one of my best running friends Bridget to run on our local trails. The trail system we chose is called Boston Lot. This trail network is pretty expansive and leads to cool sights like an old rock quarry. The trails are marked with signs but still very confusing so I would suggest snapping a photo of the map beforehand for reference. My friend Bridget and I run trails all the time together but are both super directionally challenged so spend a lot of time getting lost on tacking on extra miles. Our run ended up being six sweaty miles. We were thankful to be a little cooler in the woods!

Tuesday

The humidity was stifling and I had a time crunched schedule so I opted for an indoor workout in the air conditioning on Tuesday. 45 minutes on the elliptical did the job.

Wednesday

Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July!

On Wednesday I ran a 4 miler out and back from my house. We live on a dirt road which is always great to run on and there is a lot of tree coverage so it was thankfully slightly cooler.

Thursday

Go away bears!

Go away bears!

This was a day to conquer my fears. I recently had an encounter with a bear on one of my local trails when I was running with my dog. This has made me super nervous to run alone on the trails. Since it was still incredibly hot though I wanted to run in the woods. So, I opted to head back to the Lyme Hill trail and to try again. This time Teddy Bear, my schnauzer/shihtzu stayed home. I wore my Nathan pack because it has a whistle and blew the whistle several times as I ran. I wanted to make sure to scare any bears away. I still startle at the slightest rustle in the leaves which is usually a squirrel or chipmunk. This trail is short but has a good little elevation gain. roundtrip is 1.8 miles. No bears this time just a great short run followed by a plunge in the Connecticut River to cool off afterwards.

Friday

YOGA. I haven’t done yoga in awhile but I have some free passes so I decided to check out the Mighty Yoga studio. I love yoga but it is hard for me to bend like a pretzel. I am not very flexible from all of my running and there is always a lot of popping of hips and poses that are hard for me to achieve. I always feel great afterwards though. The calming breathing in yoga sessions always makes me feel great and I love the feeling of opening my joints.

Saturday

Northern Rail Trail

Northern Rail Trail

In anticipation of running the Loon Mountain Race on Sunday I went out for an easy, flat 4 miler on the Northern Rail Trail. This trail goes on for miles and miles. There were many people out biking and running. I am looking forward to running here with my dog again soon.

LOON Mountain Race. 6.6 miles of mountain running “fun.” It’s been 5 years since I ran this race and was happy to be back for the challenge. There were a record 500+ women running the race due to increased participation with an initiative by the race directors and Trail Sisters to get more women running the race. I had no expectations for the race other than to get out and enjoy being on the mountain. It was sunny but not too hot with bluebird skies. I finished in 1:38.52, 16/62 in my age group. This is a challenging course so I was pleased with my finish time considering the fact that I haven’t been running as much lately since CrossFit entered my life. I want to run this race again though and train harder to see if I can beat my time. A highlight of the race was getting to see my awesome running an d blogging friends Sarah (Run Far Girl) and Angela (Happy Fit Mama)! A full race recap is coming soon!

I’m linking up with Wendy over at Taking the Long way Home and Holly at HoHo Runs for this week’s wrap-up. Be sure to check out their blogs, along with the other linkers!

  1. Gah! Bears! That’s terrifying! I’m glad the whistle worked!

I wish we had more trails and mountains around here. They definitely offer such beautiful views and a change of terrain.

  2. My sister-in-law and brother-in-law live in NH, and in fact my very first time skiing was at Loon Mountain. It is so beautiful up there! They used to live in Rye, but now live in Kensington.

I clicked the link and read about your encounter with the bear. OMG!!! How terrifying. I am so happy you and your dog got out safely!

  3. Nice job on that race and how fun that you got to meet up with Angela and Sarah!!!

We don’t have bears around here but I still get nervous when I hear a rustle in the bushes. I worry about creepers!

  4. I think the whole east coast was hot last week – it must be a heat wave if it reached you! I am not very flexible at yoga either, but it feels so good — even if forward fold is a challenge.

  5. We have an untagged mountain lion on our trails, so that makes me a little nervous – but I’ll run with someone of possible and stay off the trails at dawn and dusk. So glad you were safe! Such a great week of workouts and you look super fit my beautiful friend. xoxo
