Polar Vortex.

It’s here again! Maybe not as bad in the Northeast as it is in the Midwest but it is still freezing and when the temperatures drop that means its time to dig out the heavy duty winter running gear. It’s all about the right gear and the right layers. Footwear is important too especially when its icy. Let’s dive in and take a peek at some of my favorite winter running gear!

A treadmill

Kidding. Not kidding. Don’t go out when the temperatures are dangerous, it’s just not a good idea to risk getting frostbite.

Skirt Sports Wonder Wool Skirt

Skirt Sports Wonder Wool Skirt

This is easily one of my favorite pieces of winter running apparel. When cold weather hits you often need more than just leggings to stay warm. If you are like me then your rear end can get extra chilly so having the Wonder Wool Skirt is the perfect answer. Here is the product description from Skirt Sports, “ultra-soft, wool-blend skirt adds extra warmth along with the perfect amount of booty-coverage. Full-length, built-in tights.”  The Wonder Wool Skirt currently comes in black, Cosmo Pink and True Blue. The Skirt keeps your bum warm and makes you look cute too!

Since I am a Skirt Sports Ambassador you can use my code for 15% off full and/or sale items excluding gift certificates, outfit deals, flash sales, and 3rd party items (like Goodr or Flipbelt type product). Just use DISCOUNT CODE: SSA946SAN at checkout!

North Face Women’s Motivation Thermoball Jacket

I have an older version of this jacket without the hood that I just love. The perfect combination of Thermoball (primaloft) and stretch fabric. This jacket moves with you when you are winter running and when the cold weather hits. The addition of a hood is the perfect thing for when the wind starts whipping.

I like to layer up with Ski socks when the temperatures dip. You can’t beat wool and wearing tall ski socks gives you an extra layer of warmth over your calves. Darn Tough Ski Socks come in several different styles including lightweight and padded. They also have fun designs in case you want to pull them on over your running tights.

Headsweats Winter Beanie

Keep the heat in! Your head acts like a chimney so covering it up will help your body to retain the heat that it needs to stay warm. Headsweats has Pom beanies and the more traditional beanie to add to your winter running gear collection.

Kahtoola MICROSpikes

These are my go to for winter trail running. The spikes are a bit overkill, not so comfortable, if you are running on an icy road surface so instead you could try Kahtoola NanoSpikes (less intense) but they are perfect for winter trail running and will ensure that you stay upright! I never have trouble with these falling off due to the rubber that fits over your shoe.

I could go on about what you might need for winter running gear but this list definitely gives you a pretty good start! Dressing like an onion is definitely part of the strategy for dressing for winter running. Layers are key and you need to make sure that what you choose does a good job of wicking away moisture because even when the temperatures dip you will still sweat.

  1. I can layer up and be ok, but if my hands or ears get cold I hate it. So as long as I have a good pair of glove and a headband to cover my ears I can make just about any other layer combo work.

  2. That hat is SOOOO cute! I have a pretty big collection of pom beanie hats, adn I sometimes layer a fleece headband under them. I LOVE my SmartWool socks, but I think any wool sock is a necessity this time of year. I have not heard of Darn Tough, I’m gonna check out their site!

  3. LOL on the treadmill! I have a few pieces I wear over and over all winter because they keep me warm without overheating. I prefer to wear a warm top and a vest than a full jacket, but I still hold onto a few jackets just in case!

  4. Honestly, we don’t really need much in the line of winter gear in Florida. Sometimes i use a fleece ear warmer if it’s windy, and I always have to wear gloves because of my Raynaud’s. Those I snag from Target for under $3/pair. We don’t need anything much more technical than that.
