Next up, Spartan Sprint!
This weekend I am doing my first ever (and maybe last) Spartan Sprint. It is my friend’s 40th birthday so in celebration of her we are all joining in the racing festivities in Canada. She is a seasoned Spartan racer, racing everything from Sprints to the Ultra Beast but most of us are newbies when it comes to the obstacle racing scene. While the running is something that I can easily handle, the obstacles are a different story. We will be climbing ropes, climbing over walls, crawling under barbed wire??? and more. There will be mud and fire. My kids are convinced that we will catch on fire. We of course have assured them that we won’t. If you can’t complete the obstacle then you must complete a series of burpees. Thankfully I have my CrossFit training to help me through some of what is to come especially the burpees. One of the key elements of a Spartan race is that you won’t know the obstacles until you see them on race day. I have to say that I am excited to be racing for fun and with a team, The Vermonsters and I have a feeling I will be doing a lot of laughing during the race as I tackle (and fail ?! or succeed) to navigate the obstacles.
The Spartan Sprint is a 5K+, a distance that I can easily handle. These days I have been doing a ton of running as it is just so nice outside and it’s all I want to do. However there are 20+ obstacles! EEK! The closest I have come to an obstacle is navigating over roots on my trail runs (ha!). I am ready to have fun, to challenge myself and to celebrate with my friends after our finish! Who knows, maybe I will be hooked and decide this kind of racing is for me. If not I have my eyes on several fun trail and mountain races this summer and am hoping to squeeze in a triathlon (either Olympic distance or Half Ironman) this summer and fall.
Wish me luck!
Have you ever done a Spartan Race or any other obstacle race?
