What do leaf peepers and the government shutdown have in common?
Leaf Peeping is at its peak in New Hampshire right now just in time for my birthday (on Friday. Yikes!) and the government shut down. Government agencies are closed and job posts remain vacant in the White Mountain National Forest. But never fear!!! New Hampshire State Parks including favorites The Flume Gorge and Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch will still be open. This is good news for New Hampshire tourism and good news for the leaf peepers as the mountains are currently on fire with colors ranging from radiant gold to rich reds and dark purples. This is good news for runners too because it means our trails are still open and welcome for a running or hiking adventure in the White Mountains.
So what are you waiting for! Grab your running shoes and get in your car and drive north for a leaf peeping adventure. It will be spectacular, I promise! Even though I have lived in New Hampshire now for 13 years I am still amazed every fall as nature paints the trees in a glowing hues.
Here are some of my favorite trails (for hiking or running although some are pretty rugged for running!) in the White Mountain National Forest:
- Crawford Notch
- Artists Bluff
- Flume Gorge
- Lonesome Lake Trail
- Zealand Falls
- Falling Waters Trail
Do you have any favorite trails in the White Mountains?
