Sometimes the changing seasons can be hard. Fall in New Hampshire is gorgeous especially right now with all of the glowing leaves. However, there is also an impending sense of sadness as the leaves fall, the days grow shorter, and the weather gets colder. When it gets colder outside I have a desire to hibernate in the kitchen, preparing big crock pots of stew and soup, apple pies, and loaves of bread. I mourn the warm days gone by as I have to retire my summer clothes, flip flops, and warm weather running gear until spring remerges.

Fall doesn’t have to be dark and gloomy though and as a runner there are several ways to keep a spring in your step and to stay motivated to be faster and stronger. Since I decided not to run the NH Pinnacle 50K (which would have been today) I am already feeling fresher and more renewed.  Instead of feeling stressed about getting my miles in I am using this time to regroup and refocus and I am excited about having some running fun for the rest of the fall and into the winter before my Boston Marathon training starts.

Here are 5 tips for fall running to keep you fast, fresh, and having fun:

  1. Choose your own adventure-pick a new trail to run on that you have never been on before. The views will be exciting and you will be grateful for the change.
  2. Choose some fun races to do that you wouldn’t normally do (I am running a new trail race, The Vulcan’s Fury Trail Race, in a few weeks and may try to run the Philadelphia Half Marathon over the Thanksgiving Holiday)
  3. Try out some new running gear to keep you warm (I am loving my new Skirt Sports Tough Chick Top in Sangria/Aberdeen (thank you!!!) complete with everyones favorite feature, thumbholes).
  4. Try out some new running shoes in a bright fun color, perfect for crunching through the fall leaves covering the trails. (I know I said I wouldn’t do this but my feet just haven’t been happy (tendonitis and plantar fasciitis)on my list is a trip to the Podiatrist to get set up with Orththotics)
  5. Bring a new running buddy along for a run.  Going for a run with a friend is great because sometimes it is nice to share conversation during a base run rather than just focusing on the run.

  1. Absolutely gorgeous pic Sandra! I ran a leisurely run this morning soaking in the colors. The gray and brown season will be here before we know it so it’s time to soak it all in now. BTW – I seriously was thinking of doing Vulcan but waited too long to register. Sold out! Have fun!
