Happy Halloween and cough, cough . . . TCS NYC Marathon Training Update
First of all Happy Halloween! It feels like we have been celebrating Halloween for weeks now! We’ve been having a great time at costume parties, and pumpkin carving and will be trick or treating tomorrow. It’s fun but its been exhausting! We’ve definitely gotten a lot of mileage out of our costumes this year. This year the kids wanted to dress up in matching costumes to me and Organic Runner Dad. We each had our own mini-me! It is such fun to get dressed up with the kids and to see their excitement on Halloween. I love all of the magical energy of this age!
Once we get through Halloween it is the final countdown the the TCS NYC Marathon on Sunday, November 6th! Unfortunately my training mileage this week was ZERO. Yes, you read that correctly. I started feeling very sick last weekend and have been battling an upper respiratory infection all week. I’m guessing that my body was fatigued from my 22 mile training run which left my immune system a bit week and open to catching the nasty virus that my kids had been struggling with. It’s 3 weeks since my son got sick and he is still coughing! I spent much of the week resting drinking lots of fluids and trying to get to bed early! When I get a cold it can rapidly turn into bronchitis so I have been trying very hard to not have this progress into something worse. Since the marathon is now only a week away I decided to head o the Minute Clinic today to get checked out since I have been coughing my head off. It turns out its just a virus so hopefully it will move along quickly so I feel ok to run 26.2 miles on Sunday!
Obviously since I have been sick I am not putting to much pressure on myself for a time goal for this marathon. At this point I need to focus now on soaking up all that the NYC Marathon has to offer! There will be 50,000 runners on the course which is bigger than the Boston Marathon! I am also excited to be running for TEAM Clarke. I have met my fundraising goal for The Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech by raising $2596. There is still time to make a donation if you’d like to give. 100% of donations will go to the Clarke Schools to help bring services and supports to hearing impaired children who attend Clarke and receive services from the Clarke Schools. Clarke’s mission is to provide children who are deaf or hard of hearing with the listening, learning, and spoken language skills they need to succeed through schools in Boston, Jacksonville, New York, Northampton and Philadelphia and also via teleservices.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that I feel 100% better by the time race day comes around . . . we shall see, until then I’ll be continuing to chug fluids and down cough drops like they are the best Halloween candy!
Have you had to change race goals due to sickness before?
