It’s the Off-Season
Happy Friday Friends!
In Northern New Hampshire a shift in the weather is definitely upon us. The days are darker, most of the leaves have fallen from the trees and we were even surprised with some snow and temperatures in the 30’s (not ready!!!). But I am keeping my smile and preparing to fight off the S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder) this winter. I will be running, swimming, boot-camping, yoga-ing, cycling (indoors), playing with my kids and cross country skiing my blues away this winter!
What are your best strategies for staying positive during the long winter months?
I am currently enjoying some time away from racing and giving my body a break. I am also trying out some new ways of staying active. This week I officially started Bootcamp with one of my friends and I have to admit that I am getting my butt kicked. I have been doing strength training on my own but it has been a long time since I did any lifting in a more focused group in sets and intervals meant to leave you dripping with sweat and your muscles shaking. Although it is torturous I admit I am excited to gain some new strength this winter. This week I also enjoyed some great running as my legs are finally starting to feel recovered. On Wednesday I had one of those runs where you feel like you can run forever (YES!) I ran 6 miles but could have gone for 16. It’s been awhile since a run felt like that. I am looking forward to some “off-season” training and am eyeing some races for the spring and summer . . . maybe a marathon, definitely a Half Ironman and some other triathlons . . . we shall see!
What spring marathons would you suggest? I am toying around with the idea of running the Sugarloaf Marathon in Maine.
Now that you’ve heard a little bit about my week this week I’m sharing my Friday Five: Five things I’m Loving Right Now!
1. Sabre Personal Alarm: Portable Safety and Security
I love running in a group but that isn’t always possible and running alone comes with some added safety concerns. I was excited to receive this Sabre Personal Alarm at the Rise. Run. Retreat. in our awesome swag bag. this portable safety alarm is awesome because it is small enough to fit in the pocket in my Skirt Sports Skirt and after a run I can also keep it on my key chain. In an emergency you can easily activate this alarm which has a 110 dB siren to scare someone off and to alert others that you are in need of help.
I have always loved fitness gear and gadgets. Wahoo Fitness sent me the TICKR X Workout Tracker to try. This is going to be an awesome gadget for off-season workouts. This tracker captures motion and intensity of workouts, tracks your heart rate, has treadmill mode to track pace and distance, captures cycling cadence, counts reps and more. The TICKR X uses bluetooth technology and works with many different apps including RunFit, 7 Minute Workout and Wahoo Fitness Apps.
3. Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 (#waveinspire12)
Over the fast year I have become a convert to Mizuno Running ShoeS for the road. After I injured my back last year I went on a quest to find shoes that would fit my narrow fit well and give me the right amount of support and I ended up loving Mizunos (#mileschangeyou). Recently I was excited when FitFluential offered me the chance to try the new Mizuno Wave Inspire 12. Since I have started running in them I have loved everything about them. These Wave Inspire 12 offers moderate stability without being overly stiff. With each wear they are becoming more comfortable. I also love the bright purple color! Have you tried Mizunos Running Shoes before?
Over the summer when I was at BlogFest with Sweat Pink I was fortunate to wine a Basis Peak Fitness and Sleep Tracker. I have to say that this watch is pretty great. I had been wanting a fitness and sleep tracker that was also a watch so the timing was perfect. The watch has so many great features that you would love.
Here are some of the features:
- Pairs with smart phones and can alert you of texts, calls, e-mails and events on your calendar
- Tracks your heart rate using four sensors
- Monitors your sleep and when paired with your watch you can check out how your sleep was . . . I need to work on better sleep habits!
- Tracks steps and movement when walking, running, and cycling
- Checks to see how many calories you have burned based on your activity level
- Has an easy to use touch screen
- Is comfortable and bands are easy to change depending on which style you like best (Mine came with black but now I’ve switched to blue!)
- The Basis Peak watch can now be paired with the Runtastic App to track your running routes and mileage! (I am pretty excited to try this out!)
I was recently asked to try Qrunch Organics Quinoa Burgers. I was able to get the original flavor at Natural Provisions, a local healthfoods store. These burgers are made of quinoa, millet, organic vegetables and coconut oil (full ingredient list). They are GMO Free Verfied by the Non-GMO project, USDA Organic and certified gluten free. I have come to love quinoa and these burgers are a great alternative to traditional veggie burgers. I love to eat mine with guacamole or slices of avocado, some lettuce and tomato either with or without a nice bun. They are best when cooked in a skillet or on a grill to keep them nice and crunchy. Have you ever tried a quinoa burger before?
Now that I have shared my current five favorite things I ‘d love to hear what you are loving right now! Please leave a comment. Thanks and happing adventuring!
