A week has gone by since my trip to California for BlogFest with SweatPink (read last years recap). I had such a blast with friends laughing and learning and working out of course. I also have renewed energy for all things blogging and am ready to share my top five fun takeaways from this years BlogFest with you.

So, without further ado . . .

    Last year I met Natalie from Nat Runs Far at the conference after reading her blog. Since then we have managed to meet up two times over the past year including a fun pre-race meet up at the Boston Marathon and then again at this years conference in LA. I am also very excited because she will be joining me again this fall in Vermont at the Rise. Run Retreat! It was so great to be able to connect with Natalie as she is such a warm, caring and kind person as well as a badass Mother Runner and blogger. I don’t think we stopped talking from the moment I arrived in LA and the laughter was non stop. Not only did I get to spend time with Nat at the conference but she and her beautiful family also welcomed me into their home! In addition to hanging out with Nat I saw many other awesome bloggers including Coach Debbie Runs, Liz Wilson Yoga, Running with Ollie, SuzyLyfe, Jamie King Fit (Founder of Fit Approach) and many other amazing women (and yes, there were even a few male bloggers too!)

    It is hard not to feel inspired when you are surrounded by thought leaders and highly motivated individuals at BlogFest which is a part of the Annual IDEA World Fitness Convention. One of the highlights this year was hearing Olympic Gold Medal Swimmer Amy Van Dyken speak. She is this years recipient of the IDEA World Fitness Inspiration Award. Amy Van Dyken’s life was changed forever when she was in an ATV accident in June of 2014. She almost didn’t make it and remains paralyzed today from a spinal cord injury. Van Dyken Rouen remembers her doctors telling her to say goodbye to her husband as they didn’t think she would survive, her spinal cord coming dangerously close to piercing her aorta. Her survival was miraculous and she and her doctors believe that her incredible fitness and positive mental attitude were what helped her to pull through. Her acceptance speech was a powerful reminder of everything that we are given in life and that each day should be lived with inspiration and a go after it attitude!

    During BlogFest we also got to hear former Today’s Show Correspondent Jenna Wolfe speak about her journey into better health and fitness and motherhood (and I mean just check out her arms!). She was an energetic inspired speaker and her words made you want to get out of your seat and go after your dreams. She told us that, “The best workout that you can do is whatever gets you working out!” and “There are two times in life, now, and too late.” She is so very right! It is never too early to get started chasing after your dreams!

  3. You will workout, and then you will workout some more! This blogging conference is great because it takes place at the same venue as the IDEA World Fitness Convention and when you attend BlogFest with SweatPink you have access to workouts at the convention as well as the Fitness Expo. Sweatpink had several workouts organized for participants including a super sweaty workout session with celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson who kicked our butts with circuit training.

    I also snuck in some laps in the hotel pool during some downtime which was great since I need my pool time for my training for the Timberman Half Ironman that I have coming up in August!

    Natalie and I also attended an awesome bootcamp session with trainer Todd Durkin from NBC’s strong. I love the bootcamp format. This workout was energized and super fun and sweaty.

    We followed bootcamp with a spin session focused on heart rate training with Real Ryder spin bikes which I loved! And again I ended up as a sweaty mess but spinning and getting my heartrate up felt so good!

    The workouts kept going even after we left BlogFest! As a bonus I got to stay with Natalie for another day and night where we squeezed in a 7 mile run which included running along the beach (sadly Nat had to bike as she is dealing with Plantar Fasciitis) and we also got some more laps in at their neighborhood pool!

  4. You will learn new blogging and social media tips and tricks! I always love the takeaways at a conference. I am a lifelong learner. In the world of blogging and social media everything is always changing and there is always more that could be done better or differently. Some of my best takeaways were from the session about food photography. I want to improve the photography on my blog and in my instagram feed. The photography tips are great for food photos and product shots. I have huge room for improvement here! I also loved the session from Amanda Tress where we discussed effective content marketing using social media tools such as facebook and facebook live. I am hoping to set up further time to talk with Amanda as to how to grow my blog and social media followings further. We also had a session on snapchat which I am still scratching my head over and trying to figure out but we’ll see. I did learn that you can follow me just by using my snapcode . . . in snapchat hover over the image below and you can follow me . . .

    I also loved the 2 interactive sessions. One was a roundtable discussion in small groups of bloggers on different topics such as branding and monetization. We also did 1 on 1 peer reviews of each others blogs. This was a helpful exercise as it gave me some good insights of people’s first impressions of the blogs both good and bad, I definitely have some things that I hope to change and to work on in the near future!

  5. You will get to try out and see new fitness equipment and gadgets! The expo features fitness retailers ranging from Water Rower vendors, to organic beef jerky vendors, to running shoe vendors, to Zumba demonstrations . . . the list goes on and on. The expo was a great opportunity to network with brands who you hope to work with on your blog. There were so many cool products to see and try out, Natalie and I had a great time chatting with the vendors and trying out some products (some of which were hilarious).

    I loved my time at this years conference and am still digesting everything that I learned. I love to travel but returning home to my family was surely sweet!

  1. I’m so excited to meet Nat for the first time at Rise.Run.Retreat! And I’m slightly jealous that you got to spend so much time with her. Don’t get me started with Snapchat. I have NO idea what I’m doing and rarely use it just because I’m not a fan of use it right now. I like to take a pic and use it later when I have a moment!

  3. Still all about those pants. SO ALL ABOUT THOSE PANTS. I agree with each and every one of these takeaways! I loved seeing you–I wish we had spent more time together! I also wish that I had done more workout type classes. I had a few classes that were kind of washes…. boooo.
